Driving in Fuerteventura

The driving rules in Fuerteventura do not differ much from the rest of Western Europe. The roads are of good quality and there are many long clear stretches, sufficient signs, and fewer vehicles than many other western European countries. Nonetheless, drivers should note the following:

Driving Rules & Regulations

Drivers must be at least 18 years old and the legal age to rent a hire car is 21 years old. Cars drive on the right side of the road and overtake on the left. It is illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving.

All drivers are required to carry their license and vehicle paperwork at all times.

Use of seatbelts is compulsory.

Whilst driving, all footwear require a strap behind the ankle.

There are a number of items which are compulsory whilst driving under Spanish laws. These are: passport/identification card and driving licence, two reflective warning triangle - this is in case of accident or breakdown to be placed in front of and behind the vehicle, reflective jackets (one per person) - if you exit the car on the road outside urban areas you must put the jacket on inside the car, therefore do not keep them in the boot, spare light bulbs - make sure you also have the tools required to change them, valid car insurance, and proof of permission to drive the car. Additionally, if you wear glasses whilst driving it is required that you have a spare pair in your car.
